WMATA SmartTrip

An easier DC public transit experience

While I was living in Washington, DC, I heard about a little Neapolitan pizza shop on the other side of the District that was "really good, Jessie, I promise." A born and bred New Yorker, I was skeptical this pizza would meet my standards, but I took the chance and I ventured from my Capitol Hill apartment to Cathedral Heights, a neighborhood on the opposite side of the city.

The journey would require bus and metro usage, which is unusual--usually one system will get you to where you want to go, if you're willing to walk a little. I looked to the city’s sponsored public transportation app for assistance, but it was no help. The digital ticketing function was clunky at best, and there was no navigation assistance. This is problematic for locals who are technologically or directionally challenged, but even more so for tourists unfamiliar with the city.

I redesigned the WMATA app by cleaning up the digital ticketing and wallet features. I also incorporated navigation assistance that included information from DC's many transportation options.

During the research phase, many survey respondents noted their preference for Europe’s public transit apps. They appreciated a more comprehensive experience with all needed features in one place. This repeated comment heavily influenced my design decisions.
